Top 20 Lines > Arecastrum romanzoffianum
Arecastrum or Queen Palms have been planted extensively all round the world because of their rapid growth and tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions. They are often the first choice of landscapers who want to create a tropical atmosphere in their garden designs. Queen palms grow on solitary trunks up to 20m tall and up to 1m in diameter.
Arecastrums love a free draining sandy loam and grow fastest when they receive plenty of water over hot summer months. In New Zealand these palms will growth as far south as Taupo if given shelter when young.
Queen palms are often planted in groups or avenues to help frame views or give height to a garden where space is limited. They are usually planted with other tropical shrubs around the base but can look fantastic when planted with weeping maples or hydrangeas around the bold grey trunks.
Arecastrum romazoffianum is a native of Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina and is also often called Cocos plumosa or Syagrus romanzoffianum
