This particular American selection of the Evergreen Magnolia has rightly become popular worldwide. Glossy green foliage with typical rich brown velvet undersides, large creamy white scented flowers and dense compact pyramidal growth are all part of Magnolia Little Gems appeal.

Evergreen Magnolias perform best in well-drained humus rich soils. Keep the roots cool with deep mulch and water regularly during the dry summer months. Regular pruning or trimming will help to keep Magnolia Little Gem tidy and compact.

Little Gem makes a wonderful specimen tree trimmed up onto a single stem or left bushy and bold in mixed borders. It has been used as a topiary subject, hedge, screen, and useful street tree. Little Gem , well fed and watered makes a great large scale tub tree.

Good things take time! Warren Steed (Steeds Nursery North Carolina USA) selected Little Gem from a crop of Magnolia grandiflora seedlings in 1959. It was released into American Nurseries in 1974 and has been available in New Zealand from the late 1970s. Little Gem is now one of the worlds most popular ornamental trees.
