Exotic Trees > Fagus sylvatica Purpurea
The Purple Copper Beech is a large growing stately tree with deep purple, almost black foliage in spring. The leaf colour fades over summer to a bronze green.
Copper Beech require little maintenance and generally grow with few problems. New trees should be watered deeply during the dry summer months.
Fagus sylvatica Purpurea are best planted with plenty of space, they make an impressive avenue species or street tree in wide berms and traffic islands. The Purple Beech can also be used as a formal hedge, screen or shelter belt if trimmed or clipped regularly.
One of the best selections of Purple Beech is Fagus sylvatica Riversii. This tree has larger darker foliage that holds it colour much longer into the summer. It forms a more open tree when young.
