Exotic Trees > Archontophoenix alexandrae
Archontophoenix alexandrae or King Palm is an Australian native palm that has been extensively to create a tropical theme in landscapes around all temperate regions of the world. The King palm is a solitary trunked palm with a graceful head of arching feathered fronds and a bold striped trunk . While they can grow up to 20m tall they are more often seen at only 3 to 6m tall. On mature palms large spectacular flower spikes will develop out of the trunk just below the oldest set of fronds.
While not quite as hardy as their nearest relative, the Bangalow , King Palms can be planted in all sheltered frost free regions of new Zealand. They need a fertile free draining soil to thrive and will grow rapidly if given plenty of water over the hot summer months. Regular applications of organic mulch around the root zone will help to keep these palms vigorous and healthy.
King palms look great planted either as individuals, or in groups of varying height. As specimens they will give a delicate shade and tropical feel to a landscape and can be planted close to buildings or in gardens where space is limited but height required.
