Thuja occidentalis Smaragd
Since its introduction almost 60 years ago Thuja Smaragd (smah RAHG) has been a slowly rising star worldwide. Also known as Thuja “Emerald” or “Emerald Gem” this trouble free conifer grows into a beautiful almost glossy rich green column, requiring no trimming to look neat and tidy all year round.
Plant Care
Smaragd can be planted in almost any well-drained soil type and requires little if any maintenance. Trim lightly once a year if planted as a hedge. Remember to maintain a pyramidal shape to avoid the plant becoming open or bare a the base.
Application
Use Smaragd s a columnar accent or formal hedge. Plant as markers or “posts” in narrow spaces or in pots and planters.
History
Famous now as a modern rose breeder, D T Poulsen Nurseries in Denmark brought Thuja Smaragd to the world in the 1950s. As an agent for Poulsens, Rainbow Park Nurseries has introduced the spectacular Parade , Towne and Country , and Castle series of roses to the New Zealand market.
