Knightia excelsa
Rewarewa
Rewarewa is a tall pyramidal tree often found on ridges and dry places in coastal and lowland forest throughout the North Island and around Marlborough in the South Island . The rusty orange brush like flowers are often produced in large quantities and are a favourite food source for many native birds.
Plant Care
Like other members of the Protea family Rewarewa require very free draining soil to thrive, but shouldn't be alowed to dry out until well established. Avoid using fertilisers with a high nitrogen content when planting and stake well until established. Thrips can be a problem in shelered warm sites over the summer but there are plenty of insecticides available to keep this pest in check if neccessary.
Application
Knightia excelsa can be used as a street tree or avenue tree in narrow berms or gardens. The pale silvery green foliage is a great foil for other lush green trees . Rewarewa look great planted in groups where space allows.
History
The timber of Rewarewa is unusual with a rich flecked pale orange coloured grain and is the most distinctive of the selection of Native Timbers used on the the little rulers and wooden pencil cases often sold to tourists
