Agathis australis
Kauri
This tall columnar iconic native forms an impressive tree of enormous proportions that was once the dominant species in Northern New Zealands forests until indiscrimanate logging all but wiped out this forest giant during the early 1900s. The slow rate of growth of Kauri still makes it a useful ornamental or garden subject in all but the smallest of gardens.
Plant Care
Kauri like a free draining soil, with plenty of organic humus to grow in. Fine lateral roots are prominant near the soil surface and should not be allowed to dry out if the tree is to thrive. Stake well for the first growing season or until well established and avoid using high nitrogen based fertilisers when planting.
Application
Kauri are a useful accent against a tall building where space is limited. Their dark olive green to oange juvenile foliage along with the distinct layering of branches is also a feature. Mature trees will shed their lower branches and develope a smoooth grey bark that flakes off as the tree grows.
