Tecomanthe speciosa
Three Kings Vine
This native vine will climb happily to five or more metres twining its rapid growing stems around anything that will support it. Large glossy three or five lobed leaves create a tropical feel and clusters of large creamy white flowers emerge directly from the bark of older woody stems in autumn are an added bonus.
Plant Care
Tecomanthe is very easy to care for growing happily almost anywhere it can get support. It can be cut back very hard every few years or trimmed lightly every year to keep it in check. Spray occasionally for aphids and scale insects.
Application
Train Tecomanthe as a lush tropical vine along wires or poles to create a screen or background for other plants. To best view the flowers, Tecomanthe needs to be grown on overhead supports or pergolas.
History
Only one plant of Tecomanthe speciosa has been found growing in its natural environment, on an Island in the Three Kings Group off northern New Zealand. The chance discovery was made by a surveying party in 1946 instantly made this climbing plant one of the rarest in the world.
