Cordyline australis Red Star
Red Cabbage Tree
This distinct red foliaged selection of the cabbage tree has proven itself to be one of the most reliable. Good strong roots, excellent colour and a compact growth habit have made Red Star one of our best selling lines.
Plant Care
Like all Cordylines, Red Star is happy in most soil types. Larger specimens should be staked well at planting and an application of a good insecticide every now and then will help keep away the native caterpillars that can make them look untidy. Don’t be frightened to cut your Cordyline back if it becomes too tall. Fresh new growth almost always will sprout from the cut trunks.
Application
Use as a colourful accent and change of foliage in mixed shrub plantings . Red Star is a useful plant to add height to plantings in narrow or confined spaces. Watered and well fed Red Star makes an excellent tub or pot plant .
History
Cordylines were introduced to eager European gardeners in the early 1800’s. It didn’t take long for them to become an Iconic part of the landscape in more temperate parts of Britain. The names Brighton Palm, Torquay Palm and Manx Palm all refer to our own Native Cabbage Tree.
