Griselinia Lucida
Akapuka
With its large oval glossy green foliage Griselinia lucida is yet another example of New Zealand’s amazing and diverse range of native flora. It occurs naturally in coastal and lowland areas from North Cape to Westland but is more frequent in Northern areas.
Plant Care
Planted in sun or semi shade, in well-drained soil, Griselinia lucida will stand considerable drought once established. Trimming regularly when young will ensure a solid bushy tree.
Application
The glossy foliage of Kapuka is a perfect foil for darker leaved plants in the garden. It will form an informal hedge or screen up to 4 or 5 meters tall, and can be a useful shelterbelt species in more exposed gardens.
History
In its natural habitat Kapuka is epiphytic, often perched high in the branches of Dacrydium or Metrosideros species.
